Banning Behavior: unit vocabulary

This is a list of some noteworthy vocabulary you'll find in this unit! Some are related to the unit topic, and others are generally useful academic words.
You'll know some of the words already, and some may be new. Take some time to familiarize yourself with them all before you get started on the passages and exercises in the unit.

  • Definition: to change
  • Sample Sentence: Larius refused to alter his behavior to please the people in charge.
Word: approach

  • Definition: to move or get close to something
  • Sample Sentence: Latoya approached the meeting spot, trying her best to not look like a spy.
  • Sample Sentence: Delicately, they tried to approach the problem of poverty in the countryside without talking about the Prince's enormous fleet of luxury cars.
Word: contentious
(adjective)
  • Definition: involving arguing, quarrelsome
  • Sample Sentence: The Supreme Leader's inner council had loud and contentious meetings about how many (or how few) protests to allow.
Word: defiant

  • Definition: openly disobeying rules, pushing back
  • Sample Sentence: Councilman Teju was defiant: he would never agree to any of the mayor's proposals

  • Definition: to remove or abolish

  • Definition: an unforeseen, and usually bad, thing that happens
  • Sample Sentence: Sadly, the incident in the library destroyed all of the books.

  • Definition: Incorrect, false, nonsensical
  • Sample Sentence: Devorah grabbed the microphone. "This regime is illegitimate! Their rules are invalid! You are owed freedom!"

  • Definition: to do things or talk with other people
  • Sample Sentence: Marissa had enjoyed her interactions with Carlos—he was one of her favorite customers! And now she wondered: will I ever see him again?
Word: legislator

  • Definition: a person who makes laws; an elected politician
  • Sample Sentence: State legislators voted to return more rights to the people.
Word: policy

  • Definition: an official rule, or set of rules
  • Sample Sentence: The Lord Commander's new policy meant we had to be inside by sundown, or the Night Men would take us away.
Word: rebellion

  • Definition: war or pushback against a government or authority
  • Sample Sentence: To the mind of a dictator, something as innocent as a sidewalk chalk drawing could be seen as an act of rebellion.

  • Definition: to make rules that control something
  • Sample Sentence: The Morality Council regulates what we can see on TV.
Word: resistance

  • Definition: opposition; an effort made to stop someone or something
  • Sample Sentence: The Imperial Guard encountered stiff resistance from the villagers when they set up a curfew.
