Reflection activity: Next steps

Start fighting for technology that respects your goals and attention

What’s next?

Once you’ve worked toward your goal for a while, take a step back to learn from your experience.
___

🧐 REFLECT: ‍

(If you’re working in a group, it may be helpful to answer these questions together.)
  1. What did you learn?
  2. What will you change permanently?
  3. What do you want others to know?
Taking control of your own habits is just the start of pushing for technology that respects our attention and our intentions. As long as hijacking our attention is profitable, companies will continue to find more powerful ways to do it.
Your personal experiences and the lessons you’ve learned are an important part of the movement for technology that serves the public good. If shifting your tech use has inspired you to take further action, you can:
  • Consider sharing your reflection on MySocialTruth.
  • Use the Imagine Humane Technology lesson in the "Seeing the consequences" unit to explore the possibilities for humane technology and envision solutions that advance systemic change.

Honestly I don't get why games are addicting for people because you are rotting your eyes out and not seeing the sun or your family while playing the same game over and over

I learned that social media can be more damaging than you think. It can change the perceptions of yourself and others.

    1. I've learned that persuasive technology uses algorithms to pull you in, which creates unhealthy habits involving scrolling for excessive amounts of time, and that it is important to watch how much time you spend on your phone. Spending more of your time without social media, and with family and friends is better for your mental health.
    2. I will change the excessive amount of time I spend on social media.
    3. I want others to know that spending time in the real world is more beneficial to your mental health.

    1. What I learned here is that I learned that social media could hijack our minds by using many tricks on us in order to get us back in and engage with it.
    2. I will probably change my notification settings that is it.
    3. What I want other people to know is please use social media wisely try a lot of things or settings if you feel like it is taking up too much of your daily life.

    1. I learned that social media is very addicting and that is by choice since all these companies are fighting over your attention so you continue to be on their platform. This is more damaging than you think since people become addicted to social media and pick up things from what they see on it, for the worse usually.
    2. I will change my thoughts on social media and start to be more cautious of it. I will care less about what people say on social media and what it shows me about the world.
    3. I would want others to be more wise about the way they use social media and what they listen to and believe on those platforms.
