Delve deeper into art with this activity

In this tutorial, we want you to think about how everyday objects and “stuff” can become art by comparing and contrasting two works of art. Look at the two images below, examine them carefully, and then think of how you might compare them. How are they similar? How are they different? What other kinds of relationships exist between them?
You might want to begin your comparison by thinking about these elements:
  • Composition: Is the arrangement of the elements in these artworks logical, or spontaneous and irrational? How did the artists create a sense of three dimensional space through composition?
  • Medium: What materials were used to create these works of art? While one is two dimensional and the other three dimensional, do both mediums create the impression of depth and space? Does one do this better than another?
  • Subject: What do you think the artists are trying to say with these pieces? What kind of impression or atmosphere do they convey? Is their subject matter clear or opaque?
  • Or maybe there is some other way you would like to describe these works of art?

For further discussion

Now that you’ve explored the similarities and differences between these two works of art, share your thoughts in the Questions area below. Then read the other responses, compare them to your own, and see if someone might inspire you to think about art in a new way.
Remember: art is always open to interpretation, so there are no wrong answers!
