Reflection activity: How should social media companies respond?

What should social media companies be doing NOW?

Reflection activity

🤔 CONSIDER:

Social media has a powerful impact on young people like you and your peers. Now that we’ve discussed the intersections between social media and the brain, and particularly how our social media taps into our cognitive biases, think about your experiences online.
  1. What are some ways that you see social media taking advantage of you and those around you?
  2. How do you think tech companies should react to the research and statistics we’ve discussed?

"How do you think tech companies should react to the research and statistics?"

I doubt they even care about the people or their consumers at all, they will not stop at nothing to get that sweet money and more engagement even if it is degrading people's brains.

They will only react and take action whenever a tragedy happens or a massive outcry from the public or a parent company/government give them a notice and then act they are "helping the community" and put down that facade once the whole situation dies down. Every single time.

it's very hard for tech company to react and take decisions in our benefits, if it wasn't enforced on them by the State, if company A started changing their algorithm more for the interest of the user, company B will take that in their advantage and take all the attention not taken by A and use in their own favor. That's why, it's an impossible mission without politics, and as the case in the US, politics is mainly influenced by companies through lobbying. So, good luck with this too.

Every tech company should limit the time spent on their app . People shouldn't spread those useless reels or fake videos.

On Youtube, I often notice notifications not just the channels I subscribed to.

idk, i think its both the companies fault and our fault. Because we can limit or do whatever we please with our life and we have choices and some apps even give us a choice to limit our time on that app but we choose not too, but some companies dont really care about what they do to people they just want money.

It's not the tech companies that are responsible, it is us. We are in control of ourselves, and we need to make a conscious choice to not use social media, or to severely limit our use.

Tiktok and YouTube shorts are decreasing people’s attention span. As well as Cocomelon. How can we increase our attention span?

They should be avoiding the damaging patterns that they create now that they know it's damaging.
